Architectural Steel Landmark

Over 60 Intricate Steel Branches

Executive Summary

The KL Midtown "Tree of Life" is a landmark architectural steel structure designed to support a complex glass panel system. The project required exceptional engineering coordination to achieve concealed structural connections, precise dimensional accuracy, and seamless integration between more than 60 steel branches and the surrounding glass façade. To meet the architect's design intent within an aggressive one-month construction programme, Sanki implemented full-scale mock-up verification, detailed fabrication planning, and a pre-assembly strategy before site installation. This engineering-led approach reduced installation risks, improved constructability, and enabled the project to be completed safely and efficiently while preserving the structure's architectural appearance.

1.0 Architectural Engineering and Concealed Connections

The architectural concept demanded a clean, seamless appearance while maintaining structural integrity throughout the complex steel framework.

circle

Concealed Connection Design

Developed customised concealed connection systems using internal steel plates, hidden stiffeners, full welding, and specialised fabrication detailing to eliminate visible connections.

circle

Architectural Precision

Achieved smooth branch-to-trunk transitions while maintaining the structural strength required to support the architectural design.

circle

Engineering Coordination

Integrated engineering and fabrication planning to achieve the architect's design intent without compromising structural performance.

2.0 Mock-Up Verification and Precision Fabrication

A full-scale verification process ensured the fabricated structure could be assembled accurately before delivery to site.

circle

1:1 Factory Mock-Up

Completed a full-scale factory mock-up to verify branch geometry, concealed connections, dimensional accuracy, and glass coordination before fabrication.

circle

Early Engineering Verification

Identified and resolved fabrication and fit-up issues before site installation, reducing rework and installation risk.

circle

Precision Fabrication

Verified every structural component prior to delivery to ensure accurate assembly and alignment with the glass panel system.

3.0 Accelerated Installation Strategy

Detailed installation planning enabled the project to meet an aggressive construction programme without compromising quality or safety.

circle

Pre-Assembly Strategy

Adopted a segmental pre-assembly approach to improve installation efficiency and reduce on-site assembly time.

circle

Coordinated Project Execution

Closely coordinated engineering, fabrication, transportation, and installation activities to maintain programme certainty throughout construction.

circle

Accelerated Delivery

Completed installation in approximately half the originally allocated construction period while maintaining the required quality and dimensional accuracy.

4.0 Project Outcome

The successful completion of the KL Midtown "Tree of Life" demonstrates how engineering coordination, full-scale mock-up verification, precision fabrication, and strategic installation planning can deliver architecturally demanding steel structures with confidence. By combining practical engineering with meticulous execution, Sanki achieved concealed structural connections, accurate glass alignment, and efficient project delivery within a highly compressed construction programme.
